The question may have been off-the-cuff, but it ought to seriously concern anyone who values freedom. As Jim Geraghty writes:
"Any lawmaker with any familiarity with the One Child Policy in China would be wary about floating these kinds of arguments. We don’t want government officials going anywhere near the argument that one size of a family is moral and a different size is immoral."
Ocasio-Cortez said there was "a scientific consensus" that life would be harder for children of the future, though she failed to site any specific studies or elaborate on what she meant by that.
The video appeared to come in response to Sen. Dianne Feinstein's failure to support the Green New Deal. Feinstein recently gained media attention after an interaction with a group of children from an environmental group that went somewhat viral. She is seen on video telling the children why she can't support the deal.
This exchange gave Ocasio-Cortez another opportunity to take her extreme ideas to the next level. While many seasoned Democrats, like Feinstein, are likely irritated by the hasty, unplanned way newbies like Ocasio-Cortez are rushing out legislation, it's important to take ideas like this seriously. The fact that a legislator feels perfectly comfortable floating an idea like limiting the freedom to have children is scary.
