Jimmy Kimmel Mocking Melania Trump's Accent is a Disgrace

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel thought it would be funny to mock the way Melania Trump speaks. Since when did it become kosher to laugh at someone's accent?

As part of his recap of the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, Kimmel started in on the President for thanking Melania for organizing the event:

"Not a chance she did one thing to help set that up. There's no -- she didn't dye eggs, she didn't fill baskets. The only thing she's been working on is an escape tunnel."

The biggest punchline though was when he mimicked how she pronounced words in a book she was reading to children at the event: "This and that.

Kimmel didn't stop there, but turned to his Hispanic sidekick on the show and added:

“Guillermo, you know what this means? You could be first lady of the United States.”

You might call Kimmel's mockery of Melania Trump's accent racist and some on Twitter called him out for it:

"I love your show and I love it when you take on Trump. But mocking Melania for her accent was a rare mis-step. Doesn't she speak several languages? (And isn't that a good thing in a First Lady?)" one fan asked Kimmel on Twitter Thursday.

"Classy. Making fun of the First Lady," another wrote, along with a face palm emoji.

"If this was some random foreigner, you people would NEVER make fun of their accent and risk offending them. What a bunch of [hypocrites] you are. You should be ashamed that you’re allowed on television," a Twitter user added.

This is not the first time Melania Trump's accent was the butt of jokes. Chelsea Handler ripped Trump for "barely being able to speak English. The Denver Post ran a cartoon making fun of her word pronunciation as well.

Melania Trump actually speaks six languages: English, Slovenian (her native language), Serbo-Croatian, Italian, French, and German. Melania Trump would be considered a cosmopolitan woman of the world if her political affiliation was different.

This is another example that for women in the Trump White House and Administration, the old rules against sexism –and in this case racism – don't apply.
