WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday, July 31, at 3:00 p.m. ET, Independent Women’s Voice (IWV) will host a national press call featuring guest remarks from members of Congress and health policy experts on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) rule – an Obama-era measure - that allows members of Congress and their staff to obtain insurance as a small business and access generous taxpayer-funded healthcare subsidies, protecting them from the Affordable Care Act’s high costs.
In a tweet over the weekend President Donald Trump hinted he would undo the rule if Senate Republicans did not pass a repeal and replace healthcare bill swiftly saying “BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!”
On the call Heather Higgins, IWV President and CEO and Founder of the Repeal and Reform Coalition, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who filed suit in 2014 to stop the OPM rule and last week proposed Amendment 272 to make Congress play by its own rules, along with U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who introduced H.R. 499, the No Exemption for Washington from Obamacare Act, and American Commitment President and health policy expert Phil Kerpen will discuss the OPM rule, how it has created a clear disconnect between Washington’s governing elite and the American public, and how a bold move by President Trump rescinding the rule would increase the chances of serious repeal and reform.

IWV was the first group to target the OPM ruling in 2013 by launching No Washington Exemption, a multi-faceted project exposing how the special carve-out shields Congress from feeling the pain. The website includes a factual quiz to test your knowledge on Congress’ health care, background information on the issue, and a petition to eliminate the unlawful subsidies. Moreover, IWV ran numerous call-to-action and social media campaigns, coordinated coalition letters, and participated in press conferences to demand that lawmakers and their staff buy insurance as other Americans do—the way the law requires.
